파시타 아바드(Pacita Abad, 1946-2004)는 필리핀 정치활동가의 가정에서 태어났다. 1960년대 말, 페르디난드 마르코스(Ferdinand Marcos)의 군부독재에 반대하는 학생운동을 주도한 아바드는 정치적 박해를 피해 미국으로 이민했다. 아바드는 1970년 샌프란시스코에 정착했고 이 시기에 Lone Mountain College에서 아시아 역사를 공부하며 아시아계 미국인의 정치와 문화활동에 적극적으로 참여했다. 1973년, 그의 동반자 잭 개리티(Jack Garrity)를 만나 터키에서 필리핀까지 육로로 여행하며 이란, 아프가니스탄, 파키스탄, 인도, 스리랑카, 미얀마, 태국, 라오스 등 아시아 전역을 가로지르는 순회 여정을 시작했다. 초국가적인 경험과 아시아 각지에서 만난 전통적이미지의 가변성은 그의 예술 활동에 풍요로운 자양분이 되었다. 특히 1983년부터 2003년까지 여러 차례 서울을 방문하였고 한옥과 수묵화, 한국의 공예에 깊은 흥미를 갖기도 했다. 1988년 국립현대미술관 과천에서 열린 《국제현대회화전》과 2003년 예술의전당 한가람미술관에서 개최한 서울 국제 여성 아트페어에서 작업이 소개된바 있다. 긍정적인 삶의 태도로 일관한 아바드는 2004년 12월 7일, 3년간의 암 투병 끝에 향년 58세의 나이로 타계했다.
아바드는 트라푼토(trapunto) 회화로 잘 알려져 있다. 형형색색의 선명한 색감이 특징적인 아바드의 작업은 손으로 꿰맨 직물, 스팽글, 구슬, 단추, 조개 등 작가가 발견한 방대한 재료들을 천 위에 겹쳐 누빔ㆍ바느질로 이어 붙이는 독특한 방식으로 완성된다. 낯선 땅에서 삶을 일구며 살아가는 이민자와 그들의 공동체를 묘사하는 사실주의 회화에서부터 추상회화에 이르기까지 다양한 주제를 포괄하고 있다. 아바드는 2004년에 타계하기까지 탈식민주의와 페미니즘, 국가적 정체성을 초월한 디아스포라의 삶을 친밀한 시선으로 공감하며 5,000여 점이 넘는 아름다운 작품을 남겼다. 인종주의와 난민 혐오, 이주 노동자 문제 등 여전히 해결되지 않는 동시대의 초 국가적 문제들을 환기하며 우리에게 많은 것을 시사한다.
파시타 아바드는 1980년대부터 주요 미술관에 전시에 참여했으며, 대표적인 전시로는 《Second Contemporary Asian Art Show》(후쿠오카 미술관, (1985), 《La Segunda Bienal de la Habana》(쿠바, 1986), 《Beyond the Borders: Art by Recent Immigrants》(브롱크스 미술관, 1994), 등이 있다. 작가는 작고 이후에도 제11회 베를린 비엔날레(2020)를 포함한 주목할 만한 전시회에서 초청되었으며, 제13회 광주비엔날레(2021), 제4회 카트만두 트리엔날레(2022) 등 주목할 만한 전시회에서 초청되었다. 그리고 2020년에는 뉴욕 아시아 소사이어티가 주최한 순회 전시에 참여했다.
시대적 담론을 앞서 갔던 그의 작업은 최근 주요 미술기관에서 아시아계 예술가들에 대한 재조명 이 활발해지며 다시 주목받고 있다. 2023년 봄, 미니애폴리스 워커아트센터 (Walker Arts Center)에서 순회를 시작하는 아바드의 대규모 회고전은 2023년 10월 21일부터 2024년 2월 11일까지 샌프란시스코 현대미술관(San Francisco Museum of Modern Art)에서도 전시될 예정이다. 파시타 아바드의 대표작들은 런던 테이트 모던(Tate Modern), 뉴욕 구겐하임미술관(Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum), 홍콩 M+ 미술관, 국립현대미술관 그리고 싱가포르 국립 미술관(National Gallery Singapore) 등 주요 기관에 소장되어 있다.
