김창열(1929-2021)은 파리 생제르맹(St. Germain)을 기반으로 활동했던 국제적인 화가이다. 북한에서 태어나 일제강점기와 한국전쟁의 혼란 속에서 유년 시절을 보낸 작가는 광복 이후 공산주의 체제의 학정을 피해 가족을 남겨둔 채 월남했다. 김창열은 서울대학교 미술대학에서 회화를 전공하고 한국근대미술가협회(이후 악투엘Actuel로 명칭 변경)를 창립한다. 작가는 1965년에 자신의 작품 세계를 확장하기 위해 뉴욕으로 이주했다. 미국에서의 체류 동안 작가는 깊은 고립감을 경험하게 되는데, 그의 추상화에 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 이는 유기체적이고 몽환적인 구성의 두꺼운 마티에르 위주였던 스타일에서 회화의 평면성을 강조하는 스타일로 추상 작업을 확장한 것에서 잘 드러난다.
뉴욕에서 접한 팝아트와 미니멀리즘을 바탕으로 순수 추상화에 관한 연구를 이어가던 김창열은 1969년 파리로 이주하여 물방울 작업을 시작한다. 이듬해 작가는 파리의 살롱 드 메(Salon de Mai)에서 하게 된 첫 전시에서 물방울 하나를 확대한 작업을 공개했다. 전시되었던 <무제>(1971)에서 보이는 것처럼 캔버스 표면을 스며 나오는 듯한 구형의 물방을 형상이 그의 물방울 시리즈의 특징이다. 추상화, 미니멀리즘 그리고 포토리얼리즘의 다양한 화풍을 넘나드는 그의 탁월한 회화 실력이 그가 물방울 모티프를 계속 추구할 수 있는 밑바탕이 되었다.
김창열이 1970년대부터 작고하기 직전까지 그의 생애를 바쳤던 물방울은 자연과 사회의 이분법에 맞서는 수단이었다. “물방울을 그리는 것은 모든 사물을 투명하고 텅 빈 것으로 만들기 위해 용해하는 행동입니다. 분노와 두려움을 몰아내고 자신을 비운다면, 평온에 도달할 수 있을 것입니다. 많은 서구인은 자아를 개발하기를 원합니다. 하지만 난 내 자아를 무화시키기 위해 이런 방법을 추구하고 있습니다.” - 김창열, 1988
김창열은 1996년에 프랑스 문화예술공로훈장 슈발리에(Chevalier de L'Ordre des Arts Award)를, 2012년에 대한민국 은관문화훈장을 그리고 2017년에 대한민국 예술원상과 프랑스 문화예술공로훈장 오피시에(Officier de L'Ordre des Arts Award)를 수여받았다. 그의 주요 개인전은 광주시립미술관(2014), 타이페이의 국립대만미술관(National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, 2012), 파리의 쥬드폼국립미술관(Jeu de Paume National Gallery, 2004) 등에서 개최되었다. 그는 파리 살롱 드 메(Salon de Mai, 1972-76), 도쿄 메트로폴리탄미술관(Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, 1977), 뉴욕 브루클린미술관(Brooklyn Museum, 1981) 등 국제적인 단체전에 다수 참여하였다. 김창열 미술관은 2016년 제주도에 설립되었으며, 주요 소장처로는 국립현대미술관, 리움미술관, 파리 퐁피두센터(The Centre Pompidou), 도쿄메트로폴리탄미술관, 워싱턴 D.C. 허쉬혼미술관(Hirshhorn Museum), 보스턴미술관(Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) 등이 있다.
