Note from the artist:

Summer. Cicadas. Listen, I don’t know what to say, but I can feel it. is a loose hanging acrylic painting on canvas. There are grommets at the top and bottom edge that are spaced in relation to the beaded patterns in the painting. These beads are painted in different scales to create a depth of field. The inconsistent shift of the color and value creates a space that is shimmering like a moss forest lit through leaking sunlight. There is clear glitter applied on the top surface of the painting pulling this effect at a material level. Two vertical beams of green pillars stand side by side of the figure that functions both as architecture, and nature. A pure white beam cuts through the right third of the painting. The figure is abnormally slender, almost pressed and squeezed by the space. He looks away from the viewer, and into the landscape. His ears are visible. This painting is also about the dense texture of cicada cries in the summer heat. I am influenced by the paintings of Charles Burchfield when it comes to aestheticizing the landscape, particularly the forest and the representation of life within. The flattening of the space through pattern and architectural elements are influenced by screens paintings by the Japanese Rinpa School of Art.
