Comprising a series of curved reliefs that resemble mountain ridges, from which delicate metal chains, silks, and threads are hung, Mountain (2020–2025) is a body of work that Suki Seokyeong Kang began during the pandemic and debuted at her mid-career survey at Leeum Museum in 2023. Kang studied traditional East Asian ink painting as a student at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, the same department she would later teach. In this body of work, Kang abstracts the real-world environments of landscape paintings, creating works from bent steel plates that are wrapped with colored threads. Each work contains colors that are inspired by a respective season. The black and gray chains and threads hanging from the underside are reminiscent of plants and waterfalls seen in the East Asian ink painting tradition.

As Kang once said, ”I wanted to find a way of reinterpreting tradition, utilizing my own language of the now.” This reinterpretation takes shape in Kang’s Mountain series as sculptures. The Mountain series is a tender look at a time-honored subject in art history and Kang’s longheld connection to the organic form.
