강서경(b. 1977)은 리서치를 기반으로 조각, 회화, 영상, 설치, 퍼포먼스 등 다양한 매체를 넘나들며 공간 개념과 개인이 사회 내에서 차지하는 위치와의 관계를 탐구한다. 작가는 한국의 전통 악보인 정간보(井間譜)에 쓰이는 격자무늬 형식을 사회적인 구조 장치로서 전용한다. 격자무늬는 그의 작품에서 벽에 기대거나, 매달리거나, 심지어 벽에서 돌출되는 형태로 변주되고 재생산된다. 작가의 조각은 영상이나 퍼포먼스 등 다른 매체에서도 등장하며 그 의미를 더욱 확장한다. 한국 전통 궁중무용에 사용되는, 왕골을 엮어 만든 꽃돗자리 화문석(花紋席)은 작가에게 있어 개인이 사회로부터 부여받는 최소한의 공간을 의미한다. 작가는 이러한 표상들을 증식시키면서 개인의 행동에 근거한 집단의식의 가능성을 암시하는 유려한 시각적 악보를 구성한다.
강서경은 서울을 기반으로 활동 중이다. 작가는 이화여자대학교 동양화과에서 학사와 석사 과정을 마치고, 런던 왕립예술학교(Royal College of Art) 석사 학위를 취득했다. 작가는 2018년 아트 바젤(Art Basel)에서 발로이즈 상(Baloise Art Prize)을 수여 받았고, 작품은 룩셈부르크 현대미술관(MUDAM, The Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art)에 소장되었다. 강서경의 주요 개인전은 서울시립 북서울미술관(2019-2020), 장 대공 현대미술관(2018), 필라델피아 현대미술관(ICA Philadelphia) 등에서 개최되었으며, 작가의 작업은 제58회 베니스 비엔날레(2019), 제12회 상하이 비엔날레(2018), 제12회 광주 비엔날레(2018), 제10회 리버풀 비엔날레(2018) 등에 초청되었다.
