Biography

Chung Seoyoung (b.1964) is a Korean artist who works with sculpture, installation, drawing, photography, and video. Following her return to Korea in 1996, having completed her studies at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, Germany, she became a leading figure in the Korean contemporary art scene, challenging the conventional boundaries of sculpture and exploring the relationships between language, objects, and space. Chung uses various materials, such as styrofoam, plastic, wood, latex, and metal, to create sculptures that are often abstract, minimalist, and enigmatic. Combining these elements, Chung creates what she calls "sculptural moments" that reveal a fluid and active state of being. Her sculptures invite the viewers to question their perception of reality.

Chung Seoyoung was born in Seoul in 1964, where she currently lives and works. After studying at Seoul National University and the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart, she held residencies with the SSamzie Space Studio Program and the Changdong Art Studio, both in Seoul. Her latest solo exhibitions include Endless Facts (Fire Station, Doha, 2026), With no Head nor Tail (Tina Kim Gallery, 2024), What I Saw Today (Seoul Museum of Art, 2022), Knocking Air (Barakat Contemporary, 2020), Ability vs. Invisibility (Tina Kim Gallery, 2017), Chung Seoyoung (Audio Visual Pavilion, 2016), The Speed of the Large, the Small and the Wide (Ilmin Museum of Art, 2013), and Apple vs. Banana (Kim Kim Gallery, 2011). Her work has recently been included in group shows at KADIST San Francisco & Incheon Art Platform (2021-22), Seoul Museum of Art (2020), National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Gwacheon, Korea (2020), National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, Korea (2019) and has been shown in galleries and museums in Frankfurt, Bonn, Copenhagen, Sydney, and Tokyo. She also exhibited at the Korean Pavilion of the 50th Venice Biennale (2003), at the Gwangju Biennale (1997, 2002, and 2008), and at the 59th Carnegie International (2026).
