Ha Chong-Hyun

Light Into Color

This publication accompanies Ha Chong-Hyun: Light Into Color, a solo exhibition presented at Château La Coste’s Renzo Piano Pavilion in Provence, France, and co-organized by Tina Kim Gallery and Kukje Gallery. The exhibition was on view from June 22 through September 1, 2025.

Ha Chong-Hyun, a seminal figure of the Korean Dansaekhwa movement, is internationally recognized for his Conjunction series, through which he pioneered a deeply physical approach to abstraction in the wake of the Korean War and the political turmoil that followed. In the context of the Provençal landscape, Light Into Color marked a significant moment in Ha’s career, placing the artist within the long cultural history of the region. The exhibition highlighted his recent paintings, which extend his color palette into vivid reds and blues, a development that both departs from and deepens the formal concerns of his earlier, earth-toned compositions.

The catalog features an essay by art historian and curator Alfred Pacquement, who situates Ha’s distinctly gestural abstraction within the broader discourse of modern painting. Full-color images document the exhibition at Château La Coste, alongside installation views from Ha’s retrospective presentation at the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia (2022) and 50 Years of Conjunction, his solo exhibition at Tina Kim Gallery (2024).
