Sink (2011) debuted at Chung Seoyoung's 2011 solo exhibition, Apple vs. Banana held at two defunct model houses in the underground floor of the Hyundai Cultural Center. The model houses were built as a stereotypical apartment flats produced by Hyundai Construction Company in the early 1990s. The site had been neglected and not used for over 10 years before "Apple vs. Banana." Chung Seoyoung spent her time in the seemingly purposeful yet non functional space and completed works that were presented in the exhibition. The title of the exhibition, Apple vs. Banana, was one that evoked an absurd contest between practical and ordinary fruit. It was an expression of an idea that life is about one's recognition rather than about one's choice. The exhibition was organized by Kim Kim Gallery, a gallery established by an artist duo Nayoungim & Gregory Maass. The work was produced by use of a kitchen sink that was part of a model home. It was taken from the wall and reassembled. Making the surface of the kitchen sink shine by coating it with varnish, and painting the floor on which it is placed with white color are a practical decision to make the work stand out as a unique object.
