After Oil is a series that reimagines the conventional medium of "oil on canvas" and challenges its established history of hierarchical dominance in the Western art world. Gimhongsok employs a variety of oil paints from his studio, applying them with thick brushstrokes to create paintings with distinctive patterns and colors. To conclude the process, he covers the oil painting with gold-colored spray lacquer, an inexpensive to traditional oil paint. Although gold is typically associated with preciousness, expense, and aristocracy, its application as a cheap gold plating in this context imparts a somewhat shabby and subservient quality.
Parenthetical words, like in 'After Oil (Almaty),' indicate the capital or a renowned city of a country. While contemplating the amalgamation of colors, the artist's specific thoughts about a particular country or ethnicity led to the addition of a subtitle evoking a city he had not personally visited. Consequently, After Oil transcends being merely an abstract oil painting; it evolves into a self-portrait that reflects upon art in non-Western countries heavily influenced by Western artistic styles. It also functions as a form of graffiti, responding to this influence by covering the original oil-painted canvas beneath a layer of gold spray lacquer.
