Minoru Niizuma (1930–1998) was a Japanese-American sculptor and educator who primarily worked with stone. This work, crafted from white Vermont marble, showcases both Niizuma’s skill in carving and his talent for abstract composition. Part of his "Castle of the Eye" series, it features a cuboid form with faces carved into concentric rectangles that recede inward, creating a rhythmic sense of depth that draws the viewer’s eye into the core of the sculpture. Although its design follows a repetitive motif, it stands apart from other Minimalist works, which often relied on industrial materials and outsourced fabrication. Niizuma’s hands-on approach embraces the natural imperfections of the marble, responding to the intrinsic properties of the stone itself. The result is a uniquely personal and organic interpretation of geometric minimalism that emphasizes the intimate connection between the sculptor and his material.
