Is it morning for you yet? | The 58th Carnegie International, Pacita Abad

Is it morning for you yet?, the 58th Carnegie International, featuring Pacita Abad, is on view at Carnegie Museum of Art from September 24, 2022 through April 2, 2023.

Organized by Sohrab Mohebbi, the Kathe and Jim Patrinos Curator of the 58th Carnegie International and associate curator Ryan Inouye with curatorial assistant Talia Heiman, the exhibition traces the geopolitical imprint of the United States since 1945 to situate the “international” within a local context.

Unfolding along two overlapping conceptual currents, Is it morning for you yet?, the 58th Carnegie International presents historical works from the collections of international institutions, estates, and artists, alongside new commissions and recent works by contemporary artists.

Pacita Abad will present a series of social realism paintings, which chronicle the Jakarta Riots of 1998. The riots, ignited by political corruption, inflation, and economic decline, targeted ethnic Chinese Indonesians and ultimately led to the fall of the Suharto regime. Pacita was living in Jakarta during the riots and documented the events through these expressive paintings, atypical from her usual, intricately constructed tapestry works.

Pacita Abad (b. 1946, Batanes; d. 2004, Singapore) was a Filipino American visual artist whose pioneering work in textiles is characterized by vibrant colors and an accumulation of processes and materials. Her immense body of work, including paintings, textile trapuntos, prints, and public art installations, traversed a diversity of subject matter: from tribal masks and social realist tableaus to lush and intricately constructed underwater compositions and abstractions. Bringing together images and experiences across cultures, economies, and histories, Abad offered reflections on the global long before the discourses of globalization and transnationalism were felt in the art world. Her work has recently been included in the 11th Berlin Biennale, the 13th Gwangju Biennale, and the 4th Kathmandu Triennale. She has received solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Arts and Design, Manila; Spike Island, Bristol; and Jameel Arts Center, Dubai. She is the subject of a major traveling survey, opening at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, in 2023. Her work is in the collections of the Tate, London; M+ Museum, Hong Kong; the National Gallery of Singapore; and the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC, among others.
