Windy Wind (1969) is a sculpture made of Portuguese Black Granite by Minoru Niizuma. The sculpture highlights Niizuma's ability to create a distinctive smooth texture in granite, a typically hard-wearing and robust material that is extracted and processed in the northern part of Portugal. This sculpture was included in two solo exhibitions in 1986—at the Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon, Portugal and the Art Point Gallery in Tokyo, Japan. Niizuma first visited Portugal in 1981 when he participated in the Évora Symposium. The artist continued traveling to Portugal extensively to make use of the widely available marble and stone, and eventually formed a partnership with Portuguese President Mario Soares in order to initiate artistic exchange between Portugal and Japan.
