Mire Lee’s Tentacle from Open Wound was a featured piece in her ambitious 2024 Hyundai Commission presentation at Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall. Notably, Lee was the youngest artist to receive this esteemed commission, and this presentation showcased some of her most expansive and complex works to date. Tentacle from Open Wound is a meticulously crafted, appendage-like sculpture fashioned from industrial materials. Its pinkish tones contribute to a remarkably skin-like texture and appearance, a characteristic element found throughout Lee’s oeuvre. A defining feature of her artistic practice is the palpable and often unsettling interaction she creates between organic forms and mechanical components. Through this particular work, Lee explores the inherent vulnerability of the human body as it exists within and is shaped by the industrialized world.
