Korean-born Wook-Kyung Choi (b. 1940) created Untitled (1974) during the second of her two critical periods living in America. Influenced by both the Korean avant-garde and American Abstract Expressionism, Choi fostered a visual language of her own, marked by dynamic brush strokes and rhythmic compositions. One of the few Korean-American artists pursuing expressionistic art, Choi made vital contributions to the diversity of abstraction. While Untitled (1974) exemplifies the artist’s characteristic gestural marks, it also demonstrates a distinct break from the bold colors that previously characterized her work. Instead, the artist shifted toward softer hues and organic curves. Facing marginalization on the basis of her gender, Choi found it difficult to find an audience during her lifetime, but has since been recognized for her historic contributions to Korean and American abstraction.
