This sculpture is a continuation of Pérez Córdova’s Contour series. Drawn from her own and others’ memories, the artist marks the outlines of windows and doors into sand. Molten bronze is then poured into the grooves; as the bronze cools and solidifies, it becomes a tangible representation of the past. Resembling actual windows and doors in scale, these wall sculptures enable the viewer to relive others’ experiences, retracing the steps of another person’s life. Titles referencing locations and objects once seen through these passageways provide suggestions for what the viewer might imagine, further displacing the works in time and space. What Direct Sunlight Does redefines the memory of sunlight as an active figure working on the observer’s body, forcing one to recall the familiar physical sensation.
