Composed of iron, metal chains, thread, and silk, Mountain is a new series that captures the unique characteristics of Kang’s sculptural work, where hardness and softness, filling and emptying coexist. While studying traditional Korean painting as a student, the artist was captivated by a style of mountain painting called jinkyeong sansuhwa, or “True-View Landscape Painting.” Jinkyeong sansuhwa is a tradition of painting that depicts actual real-world landscapes that the artist has seen with their own eyes and experienced firsthand, unlike gwannyeom sansuhwa, a tradition of painting which depicts landscapes that are imaginary and idealized. Here, Kang depicts a spring mountain that captures the energy and hue of the warm spring sun, a summer mountain showing off its verdant greens and slick exterior, an autumn mountain that combines dewy bedrock with autumn foliage, and a winter mountain that captures the subtle color and sparkle of white snow. Setting the mood and atmosphere, the Mountain series invites viewers to stroll between its peaks, feeling with their own physical bodies the different landscapes and passing hours of all four seasons.
