Still-Life, Still-City: Sehwa Museum of Art
Past exhibition
Overview
Kibong Rhee’s <End of the End>, 2008 is on view at Sehwa Museum of Art, as part of the group exhibition <Still-Life, Still-City>, which is on view through June 30, 2023.
<End of the End> consists of a white book floating gently while submerged in an aquarium lit in blue. The book appears to be swimming; the gentle movements of its pages recall that of a fluttering butterfly. Rhee says of this work, "It is a self-portrait of sorts."
"As I watched the books float and dance inside the aquarium, it felt like I was witnessing the essence of the world I was facing. By placing the books in the aquarium, they may have lost their lives, but their stories are reborn in another place. These things are interconnected in a cyclical manner. Consciousness works in the same way."
A notable characteristic in Kibong Rhee's work is the contemplation of 'water.' In his works, water exists in various forms, creating a unique atmosphere. It appears as a background in his paintings and as a primary material in his installation artworks, taking on particulate forms, resembling vapor or mist. Rhee considers the perpetual transformation of visible manifestations of water, its continual circulation and mutability.
