Kim Yong-Ik: Untitled Utopias: Cahiers d'Art, Paris
Tina Kim Gallery is pleased to announce Korean artist Kim Yong-Ik's first exhibition at Cahiers d'Art in Paris. Primarily known as a painter, Kim Yong-Ik will show three series of new prints at Cahiers d'Art produced in February 2018 in Paris at the renowned Idem Print Studio. According to Kim Yong-Ik, we have entered the era of collection, deconstruction, and compilation, an age where editing is a required process for art-making. In place of creating new works, the artist presents a clear reframing of his practices by reappropriating and reinterpreting past ideas.
The first series, titled Untitled 18 1 - 18 6, draws inspiration from his recognizable dot paintings. Echoing the seriality of his predecessors within Korea, but seeking to remove the artist's hand, these works have a feeling of machine-made uniformity created through lithography.
The second series, titled Utopia 18 1 - 18 6, focuses on the artist's interest in geometric abstraction, as well as the interplay between different surfaces. For this series, Kim combined collage with drawn rectangular shapes and coloured dots or rectangles, neither is given more importance over the other.
As a way to continue this investigation into the hand-made and the machine-made, both of the above series, Untitled and Utopia, will be presented in hand-painted versions, available as a complete suite of six.
Cahiers d'Art is in the early stages of publishing a monograph on the artist, slated for release in the fall of 2018, in collaboration with Tina Kim and Kukje Gallery. Included in this book will be texts by Beck Jee-Sook, and MOCA L.A. director Philippe Vergne.
ABOUT KIM YONG-IK
Born 1947, Seoul.
Lives and works in Yangpyeong, South Korea.
Following a transfer from studying agriculture and life sciences at Seoul National University Kim Yong-Ik attended Hongik University. Kim studied under Dansaekhwa artists and exhibited with them at the São Paulo Biennale as youngest member in 1975 together with Park Seo-bo amongst other artists and that he exhibited at the Yokohama Triennale in 2014. From 1999 - 2012 Kim Yong-Ik was a professor at Gachon University where he taught in the painting department. He was a founding member of 'Art Space Pool', a not for profit organization in Seoul, as well as director from 2004-2006. Kim Yong-Ik's career was celebrated in 2016 in a depth retrospective that dealt with the entirety of his 40 year long practice at Ilmin Museum of Art in Seoul, 2016. In 2017 the Korean Cultural Centre, London and Spike Island, Bristol co-hosted an exhibition of recent and older works entitled 'I Believe My Works Are Still Valid'. Examples of the artist's work can be found in numerous private and public collections including Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art (Seoul), Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Cahiers d'Art is a legendary publishing house, gallery, and revue founded in 1926 by Christian Zervos in the heart of Saint Germain-des-Pres. By 1960, Zervos had published 97 issues of the Cahiers d'Art magazine and over 50 books along with monographs on El Greco, Matisse, Man Ray, and African and Mesopotamian Art, as well as collections of poems by Paul Eluard, and Andre Breton.
