Cheong See Min, a Malaysian textile artist, presents her work in the United States for the first time in The Calling of Home. Her intricately woven pieces, often crafted from pineapple leaf fibers and a blend of natural and industrial materials, reflect the material culture and agricultural heritage of Malaysia. The pineapple holds deep personal significance for Cheong, both her grandmother and mother worked on pineapple farms in Johor, Malaysia.

Drawing on her family lineage, she employs an inventive weaving technique that merges Eastern and Western craft traditions. By blending traditional and contemporary practices, Cheong tells a layered story of Malaysia’s cultural and historical complexity. Other works by Cheong, feature everyday farming tools atop bamboo stools. Each stool serves as a quiet portrait of an individual farmer, a poignant meditation on presence and absence, legacy and labor.
