Kang has long demonstrated an interest in the cycles and temporality of nature. Here, the artist uses the physicality of the thick carpeting material to visualize 'day' and 'night,’ symbolizing the intangible light and dark that make up the cycle of each day. Generally considered a floor covering, these carpets also recall the artist's Mat series, works based on the traditional hwamunseok reed mat. Her 'Day' and 'Night' works can be installed as if floating slightly off the floor, arranged like a large stool for viewers to sit on, or even hung on the wall like a mural as a mechanism to reconfigure space. The geometries of these carpets—composed of squares, triangles, and circles—form part of Kang’s broader visual syntax, which also determines the structures and scale of her other series.
