Monstera belongs to Tania Pérez Córdova’s body of work in which she disrupts the appearance of lush, green leaves by puncturing and tearing their surfaces to resemble patterns from insect infestations or botanic infections. The piece is adorned with jewelry chains that fall from the ceiling, evoking an affect that lies between alluring and unnerving. The positioning of the chains draw from rainfall patterns—drizzles, showers, and storms—in the density of their arrangements, as though inviting viewers to imagine a singular meteorological event. Monstera presents an imaginary of a verdant landscape; exhibited for the first time at the artist's mid-career survey at the Museo Tamayo, the work evokes the tropical landscape of the artist's home city.
