Luc Tuymans (b. 1958; Mortsel, Belgium) is a Belgian artist who lives and works in Antwerp. Thematically, Tuymans’ work is tied to major historical events, such as World War II and the Holocaust. The artist is interested in exploring the surrounding trauma of these events, as well as their moral complexities. Formally, the artist is known for his oil paintings which appear bleached, blurred, and out of focus. This method of painting is purposeful, which Tuymans has dubbed “authentic forgeries,” drawing attention to the distortions and occlusions of historical memory. Since 1995, Tuymans has become a prolific and internationally recognized artist, participating in over 140 group exhibitions and 47 solo shows in Europe, North America, and Asia. Street (2001) marks the period when Tuymans began experimenting with more political and media-driven contexts, for example the 9/11 attacks on New York City.
