Stormy Wind (c. 1970s) is a sculpture made of Italian statuario white marble by Minoru Niizuma. This type of rare marble typically exhibits bright white hues with bold gray veining and is revered in Italy as the ideal material for carving statues. Stormy Wind evokes its title by metaphorically illustrating a strong gust of wind that has left etchings, in the form of horizontal lines across the body of the sculpture, in its wake. Whereas the rest of the sculpture’s body is smooth and fluid, these grooves are rough and textured, revealing the artist’s painstaking hand in carving each line.
