One Fine Day is a part of the series “The Sky Is The Limit,” which the artist created after a three month stay in Rajasthan, India. Greatly influenced by local garment and textile traditions, Abad created this work using a mirror embroidery technique distinct to the Indian subcontinent. Abad’s first time traveling to India was on a visit to Delhi in 1973, when she found a Rabari skirt covered with mirrors. “She was so intrigued with the mirrored cloth that she asked the village women to teach her how to sew them,” recalls her husband Jack Garrity. Abad’s adoption of these forms and techniques arose not only from an admiration of their craftsmanship and beauty, but also a sense of political solidarity with cultures that had endured colonial histories. Weaving inspiration from her travels into the canvas, Abad creates an ode to the places and people that inspired her work.
