Painted onto multiple layers of sheer fabric, Kibong Rhee’s misty and multilayered landscapes float across multiple strata, suspending his arboreal subjects in space with a simultaneous lightness and depth. The effect consistently challenges the eye, encouraging viewers to contemplate the delicate balance between temporal fleeting moments and the eternal, and evoking notions of nostalgia and ephemerality. Rhee’s interest in water in all its forms - as liquid, as fog, as a life-giving force, is a consistent theme in his landscapes, always in a continual state of evolution and disappearance. This constant dynamism is a physical process of nature that evokes a sense of beauty, reflection and fantasy; in this way physical experiences expand to become both spiritual and transcendent.
