Tender Meander is another of Kang’s sculptures with an anthropomorphic form. With its grid-shaped head of holes, slender neck, short cylindrical body, and many wheeled feet, these modestly-sized entities seem ready to go anywhere — yet wanders about with no clear direction, only to ultimately return to the same spot. Not unlike us, wanting to escape — if only for a while — but with no idea where to actually go. Even when we muster up our courage and take off, our ostensible break is unlikely to be an epic adventure; in the likeliest scenario, our so-called departure will take the shape of a gentle, muted drift, noticed, if at all by anyone. Still, even in that fleeting moment, the wind will ruffle our hair, and through it we may catch a glimpse of someone else's life. The artist's preoccupation with individual claim and subjectivity in society is especially poignant because it parallels our own wanderings, these efforts to find our place in the midst of so many.
